Bathroom Lighting Ideas & Tips
Choosing the right lighting for your bathroom is an important decision. As one of the most used rooms in a house, you’ll want to make sure you achieve a pleasant mood and atmosphere that suits your needs. Lighting can alter this mood dramatically, so careful consideration should be applied when selecting lighting options.
Ideally, the light within your bathroom should help create a space that is both inviting and relaxing, as well as practical. You may wish to have the option to set different moods through use of lighting. For instance, brighter and clearer light for getting ready in the mornings, and dimmer, more relaxing lighting for winding down in an evening bath.
Below are some popular examples of bathroom lighting fittings, and their use and functionality within the room.
Spotlights are an effective way of creating atmosphere within a bathroom. Used discreetly within ceilings, they are perfect for highlighting specific areas of the room; above a bath or shower for example. Both modern and stylish, these simple fittings can really improve a bathroom’s aesthetics.
Applying make-up or shaving requires clear bright light to ensure these tasks can be carried out effectively. Mirror lights are the perfect solution here. Integrated within the mirror, these lights help bring more light into the room when used in addition to any main lighting, or can be used independently to provide a gentler and more relaxing light for a soak in the evening.
Bath Tub Lights
For ultimate relaxation and ambience, underwater bath tub lighting is a perfect addition. Specially created spotlights fitted into the bath provide a luxurious and relaxing low light, giving a spa-like feel to your bathroom.
LED Floor Lights
Lights fitted into the floor are another great way to provide atmosphere. This contemporary solution offers something a little different and works really well in some bathrooms.
Bathroom Lighting Zones
Bathroom lighting regulations are very strict in terms of where certain fittings can be used within the room. It’s essential to check that the fittings you’ve chosen are suitable for use in the bathroom.
All bathroom lights are given an Ingress Protection (IP) rating. This shows how protected a light is from water or steam entering the fitting. Different zones are applied to a bathroom environment, with each zone requiring lights of differing IP ratings. We have outlined the regulations for these below.
- Zone 0 – Inside the bath or shower cubicle. Light fittings require a minimum rating of IP67 and a maximum voltage of 12V.
- Zone 1 – Directly above the bath or shower, up to a height of 2.25 metres. Minimum rating of IP44 required.
- Zone 2 – 0.6 metres wide, covering the area immediately next to zone 1, all around zone 1, and the area outside of the 2.25 metres directly above the bath or shower. Also covers the area around the wash basin. Minimum rating of IP44 required.
- Zone 3 – Anywhere outside of zone 0, 1 and 2where there is no water source. No IP rating required.
